About the Sponsor and Organizer
Philip Morris International (PMI) has been a patron of the arts in the United States and the world for nearly 40 years. PMI has sponsored exhibitions of Turkish, Egyptian and Korean art in the United States, brought American crafts to Russia and Middle East, and sponsored American ballet in China and Japan. The company has presented both Pavarotti and Picasso and brought American jazz to Europe, Latin America and Asia.
In Asia, PMI's support for the arts has grown considerably over the last decade. The company's cultural support programs have brought world renowned artists to the region and have helped encourage emerging talents. Regional sponsorship programs have included TRESORS: The International Fine Art and Antiques Fair for Asia (Singapore, 1993-94); The Phantom of the Opera (Hong Kong, 1995); Pavarotti in Concert (Hong Kong, 1990); Placido Domingo in Concert (Taiwan, 1988); Ten Years of Hong Kong Painting, A Retrospective (Hong Kong, 1987); Superband Jazz Series, an annual series of jazz concerts of world-class jazz musicians (Japan, Korea, Philippines, Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, 1985-1994); and City Contemporary Dance Company (Hong Kong, 1985-1994).
In the Philippines, through its local subsidiary, Philip Morris Philippines Manufacturing Inc. (PMPMI), the Philippine Art Awards continues to support the ascent of Philippine art and artists. The Awards has inspired artists to greater heights of artistic expression and excellence for a decade and continues to do so.
